Two UHL administrators, Industrial Hygiene Program Manager Pam Kostle
and Human Services Officer Pat Kosier, were recently recognized by
national organizations for excellence in their leadership roles.
Pam Kostle was recently elected as Vice Chair of the American
Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Laboratory Quality Assurance
Programs (LQAP) Analytical Accreditation Board (AAB).
The AAB grants accreditation or registry status to laboratories,
organizations and individuals throughout North America. Its goal is to
provide long-range planning and growth for present and future
accreditation programs. The board also conducts technical business for
and establishes policies of the LQAP.
Kostle, who has been a member of the AAB since January 2005, will
assume her role as Vice Chair in January 2008. She holds an M.S. in
Industrial Hygiene from the University of Iowa College of Public Health
and has been Industrial Hygiene Program Manager at UHL since April 2001.
Pat Kosier, UHL Human Resources Officer, recently received her
certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). The
accreditation is administered by the Human Resource Certification
Institute, the accrediting body of the human resource profession
affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management.
The certification involves a body of knowledge in six core areas of
the human resource profession: strategic management, human resources
development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations,
workforce planning and placement, and occupational safety and health.
The University Hygienic Laboratory is the state of Iowas
environmental and public health laboratory, with facilities located on
the University of Iowa's Oakdale Campus in Iowa City and at the Iowa Lab
Facilities in Ankeny, a Des Moines suburb. Among its many services, the
laboratory functions as a consultative and analytical support facility
for state agencies, health professionals, and citizens. UHL is part of
the University of Iowa and has developed and maintained effective and
productive collaborations with the Iowa Department of Public Health, the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa Department of Inspections
and Appeals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Geological Survey, and
local public health agencies. The UHL performs analyses on samples from
virtually all matrices, including human clinical specimens, air,
drinking water, wastewater, soil, sediment, industrial effluents, oil
and fish. In addition to performing analyses by specified methods, the
UHL provides methods development and procedure verification for
nonroutine analyses. Additional information about UHL, its programs and
services is available online at www.uhl.uiowa.edu.
