National Handwashing Awareness Week

Who knew that hand washing could be fun? Henry the Handy, of course. Henry (a creation of Dr. William Sawyer) is on a mission to reduce the spread of respiratory illness. (Listen to Henry the Hand songs and watch his videos).

By following the four principles of hand awareness, according to Henry the Hand, you will be in virtual isolation in spite of the sick people around you. Direct innoculation of your mucous membranes (eyes, nose or mouth) is how infectious diseases enter your body. Germs are located on dirty hands and by touching your eyes, nose or mouth you infect yourself with these germs.

"Germs are not wafting through the ventilation system in your home or classroom," Henry says. "Only you are responsible for giving (inoculating) yourself the flu or flu-like illnesses."

Join Henry the Hand as a champion handwasher following these four steps to hand awareness:

  1. Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating.
  2. Do not cough into your hands. (Cover your mouth with your forearm.)
  3. Do not sneeze into your hands. (Sneeze into a tissue or, if necessary, your forearm.)
  4. Above all, do not put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.
