Conference Promotes Public Health and Environmental Issues

The Iowa Public Health Conference held April 3-7 in Ames drew representatives in the environmental and public health disciplines from across the state, including many sections within UHL. The Iowa Public Health Association (IPHA) and Iowa Environmental Health Association (IEHA) coordinated the event that is sponsored in part by UHL, the University of Iowa College of Public Health and the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Pam Mollenhauer, UHL program associate, was voted as the president-elect for the IEHA during the meeting. Beth Hochstedler, UHL training and outreach coordinator, is the outgoing president of IPHA.

The conference featured a series of concurrent speakers, including Dr. Mike Pentella, interim associate director infectious disease, and Dr. Lucy Des Jardin, program manager molecular biology, whose interactive presentation was titled "The Public Health Laboratory: Today and Tomorrow." Mike also contributed to the presentation of "Terrorism Preparedness and the Real World," along with Bonnie Rubin, emergency preparedness and emergency response coordinator, and Dr. Mike Wichman, interim associate director environmental health.
