More than 120 learn to avoid laboratory acquired infections

Some 123 laboratory staff and supervisors have completed the Hygienic Laboratory's online course "Lab Biosafety: Avoiding Laboratory Acquired Infections" since the course launched in May 2008.

The interactive course is free and available any time of day through the Learning Management System (LMS) by registering online at www.prepareiowa.com.

The free course consists of four modules that detail safety issues in the laboratory ranging from protection against pathogens to the proper use of safety equipment. It was created by Jon DeMartino, writer and creative consultant, and Dr. Michael Pentella, associate director of infectious diseases. The two collaborated with the College of Public health media team to design the interactive components.

Feedback from the course includes the following:
  • Very nice course. Good points and review. Will use info from course to develop lab safety SOP at my institution.
  • Good course. Not too much information. Reasonable expectations. Modules were interactive.
  • Overall I learned quite a lot. I think the "trigger points" was one of the exercises that I learned the most with. It was the one that I was previously least familiar with.
  • This course did a good job of maintaining my attention throughout the various topics. I felt that I now understand a lot more about LAIs (laboratory acquired infections).
  • This course is awesome. I am going to require all of my clinical staff to take the course as part of their competency assessment program.
