Dr. Don Simmons, UHL environmental program manager, was recently
featured on WHO-AM Radio as part of a story about testing toys for the
presence of lead. WHO-AM's Sue Danielson conducted the interview. For the past several months, UHL's Ankeny laboratory has tested
hundreds of toys for the presence of lead. Exposure to high levels of
lead is known to potentially cause neurological problems, particularly
for young children.
Manufacturers have recalled many popular toys because of elevated
levels of lead. Recalls are listed on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission website at www.cpsc.gov. Hotlines operated by manufacturers
include Mattel's recall hotline (800-916-4997) and RC2's toll-free line
(866-725-4407), which is available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday
through Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Friday.
