Opportunities for Collaboration

Do you have a project or idea for public health-related research for which the University Hygienic Laboratory could be a partner?

The University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) provides multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art laboratory services including newborn screening, biomonitoring, infectious disease testing, environmental testing for pathogens and chemicals, and testing for agents of biological and chemical terrorism. UHL also provides training opportunities for laboratorians, public health practitioners, health care providers, and members of the public.

Service to the state is the primary focus for UHL; however, opportunities to provide laboratory services and consultation for basic and applied research are encouraged and supported. The UHL's Research and Innovation Committee (RAIC) reviews and facilitates major new collaborations or innovations.

If you have a project or idea, please give us a call or apply online, here, today!

The Process:
  1. Potential collaborators are encouraged to first contact a RAIC member.
  2. A five-page (maximum length) pre-proposal will need to be submitted to the RAIC for review. [Click here for a pre-proposal guide].
  3. The RAIC may invite the author(s) to deliver a 10-minute presentation on the concept.
  4. Pre-proposals that have the potential to conserve or generate new funds, or make UHL services more efficient or comprehensive are greatly valued.
  5. Authors will be contacted regarding proposal status as well as whether UHL resources can be committed to the project.

"Imagine the Possibilities" Seminar

The "Imagine the Possibilities" Seminar is a periodic formal presentation where invited speakers discuss topics that would appeal to UHL disciplines. These topics could include, but are not limited to, new technology and innovations, public health research, trends in public health, or an inspirational topic that would appeal to a large UHL audience.

Each seminar will be held at the Oakdale Hall Auditorium located on the University's Oakdale Campus, and will also be streamed live over the web. Also, each seminar will be heavily promoted to attract both UHL and other related university staff.

UHL staff and colleagues are encouraged to submit ideas for seminar speakers to a member of the RAIC. Please include:
  • your name and contact information
  • speaker's name, contact information, and curriculum vitae
  • seminar topic and brief justification how the topic might appeal to UHL disciplines

Invited speakers would be offered travel and hotel expenses, as well as an honorarium of $500.
