Labs Asked to Report First Three Influenza Positives

UHL recently confirmed the season's first two cases of influenza in Iowa. In order to track the incidence of illness, UHL partners with clinical labs across the state. These labs are asked to send the first three influenza positive specimens they detect by their rapid test methods to UHL using the "Viral Detection and Viral and Bacterial PCR Test" form.

"A specimen that is positive from a patient who has been vaccinated for influenza or a patient who dies from influenza is very important to submit throughout the season," says Sandy Jirsa, UHL virologist. "Please note that the test request forms have been updated. The respiratory request form and the nonrespiratory test request form have been combined. The new form is titled, 'Viral Detection and Viral Bacterial PCR Test.'"

Questions about reporting may be directed to the UHL virology lab at 319-335-4500 or via email to sjirsa@uhl.uiowa.edu.
