Dr. Mike Pentella, UHL associate director of the Disease Control Division, has been appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor for the UI College of Public Health (CPH), Department of Epidemiology.

"Dr. Pentella is the first of our lab scientists to achieve clinical status in the college. His appointment will help ensure that the CPH benefits from the resources available at one of our nation's premier public health laboratories."

Previously, Dr. Pentella held an adjunct associate professorship with the UI and, for the past four years, facilitated the Diagnostic Microbiology course for the CPH as well as serving as a guest lecturer for other courses.

Dr. Pentella joined UHL in 2002 as a program manager overseeing bacteriology, tuberculosis testing, mycology and the bioterrorism preparedness. He contributed to the formation of the Iowa's Lab Advisory Committee, which is now a subcommittee of the state's Preparedness Advisory Committee.

In 2006, Dr. Pentella was appointed to his current post at UHL.

Dr. Pentella earned his Ph.D. in infectious disease from the University of South Florida, and his master's degree in clinical microbiology from Thomas Jefferson University. He earned his bachelor's degree in microbiology from Ohio State University.

Dr. Pentella also serves on the Infectious Disease Committee for the Association of Public Health Laboratories and chairs its HIV subcommittee.
