Dr. Mike Pentella, UHL associate director of the Disease Control
Division, has been appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor for the
UI College of Public Health (CPH), Department of Epidemiology.
"The appointment represents a new era of collaboration between the
College of Public Health and our state public health laboratory," said
UHL Director Chris Atchison.

"Dr. Pentella is the first of our lab scientists to achieve clinical
status in the college. His appointment will help ensure that the CPH
benefits from the resources available at one of our nation's premier
public health laboratories."
Previously, Dr. Pentella held an adjunct associate professorship with
the UI and, for the past four years, facilitated the Diagnostic
Microbiology course for the CPH as well as serving as a guest lecturer
for other courses.
Dr. Pentella joined UHL in 2002 as a program manager overseeing
bacteriology, tuberculosis testing, mycology and the bioterrorism
preparedness. He contributed to the formation of the Iowa's Lab
Advisory Committee, which is now a subcommittee of the state's
Preparedness Advisory Committee.
In 2006, Dr. Pentella was appointed to his current post at UHL.
Dr. Pentella earned his Ph.D. in infectious disease from the
University of South Florida, and his master's degree in clinical
microbiology from Thomas Jefferson University. He earned his bachelor's
degree in microbiology from Ohio State University.
Dr. Pentella also serves on the Infectious Disease Committee for the
Association of Public Health Laboratories and chairs its HIV
subcommittee.
