The University Hygienic Laboratory is opening the door to new
possibilities for collaboration with the business, health and education
communities through the creation of RAIC (Research and Innovation
Committee). The purpose of RAIC is to explore and develop opportunities for
public-health related projects. These projects might include
entrepreneurial ventures or research endeavors that could benefit from
the expertise of UHL, which is the state of Iowa's public health and
environmental laboratory.
Through RAIC, UHL also will bring national recognized speakers to our
Oakdale Campus for "Imagine the Possibilities" seminars to explore
thought-provoking innovations and opportunities in public health.
"We are excited about the RAIC's work," says Dr. Greg Gray, UHL
scientific advisor and UI professor of epidemiology. "It will supplement
other UHL activities. We are focusing efforts on enpowering and
rewarding UHL staff for the generation of novel ideas for innovation and
collaboration."
In addition to Dr. Gray, RAIC consists of UHL staff, including
Stanton Berberich, Ph.D., program manager, newborn screening; Lucy
DesJardin, Ph.D., program manager, molecular biology; Trisha Kreman, MPH,
public health microbiologist; Pam Mollenhauer, program associate; Bonnie
Rubin, CLS, MBA, MHA, emergency preparedness and terrorism response
coordinator; Don Simmons, Ph.D., environmental program manager; and
John Vargo, Ph.D., environmental program manager.
