Novel H1N1 Influenza - Free Teleconference Series
One of the most important steps in preventing the spread of influenza is to learn more
about it. The University Hygienic Laboratory provides a free teleconference series about
influenza for laboratory staff, health professionals and those who work with children.
The UHL and the Iowa Department of Public Health usually present these sessions in the
late summer or fall.

Iowa Infertility Prevention Project Update Webinar
Health professionals and educators from across Iowa meet each year for an update about
the Iowa Infertility Prevention Project (IIPP) and emerging issues with sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs).
"The Iowa Infertility Prevention Project is an important public health program for our
state," says Colleen Bornmueller, Iowa Infertility Prevention Project Coordinator for
the Family Planning Council of Iowa. Every year, we provide screening for Chlamydia to
thousands of women and their partners who otherwise might not have been tested.
According to CDC, 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men with Chlamydia infections
are asymptomatic; they are not aware of their infections and do not seek health care.
This allows for the spread of the disease and can lead to severe and costly reproductive
health problems if left untreated."

The Top Ten List: CLIA Cited Deficiencies
Sites that conduct testing of clinical specimens for diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease must obtain a CLIA certificate and are periodically inspected. During this program,
the top ten CLIA regulations that have been cited as deficiencies throughout the nation will be identified. For each deficiency cited, the specific regulation will be explained so that labs may be better prepared for their inspection and avoid the citation.
And for those that have already been cited, examples of acceptable plans of correction will be discussed.

Biosafety and Biosecurity: Minimizing the Risks in the Laboratory
In this era of threatening natural and human-made biological emergencies from terrorism to pandemic
flu, it is essential that laboratories be safe and secure. The biosafety sessions of this program will
identify key concerns of laboratory biosafety, focusing on biosafety level 2 (BSL2) laboratories and
practices, an explanation of biosafety level 3 (BSL3) practices and how they can be used in a BSL2
laboratory, proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE), biological safety cabinets (BSCs), and
conducting risk assessments. The biosecurity session will present laboratory security principles
described in the 5th edition of the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)
manual. You will also learn how to conduct vulnerability assessments and develop a good biosecurity
plan. Finally, through the use of case studies and activities you will be able to apply these
principles and concepts to the clinical laboratory.
