Service, education and research are the primary tenets of the
University Hygienic Laboratory (UHL), Iowa's environmental and public
health laboratory. The UHL increases awareness about the impact humans
have on the environment and the many ways to preserve it through
education and training. UHL educates its environmental and public health
partners about the presence of infectious diseases and how to prevent
them from spreading throughout the population. UHL teaches laboratorians
throughout Iowa how to prepare for maladies such as pandemic influenza
and also test for harmful agents used in biological and chemical
terrorism.
The UHL supplements its education and training activities with
in-house learning opportunities at both the Iowa City and Ankeny
laboratory facilities. We provide internships, fellowships and job
shadowing opportunities which allow young scientists to observe and
experience the environment of the public health laboratory. Teachers are
also welcomed at both facilities to observe techniques used in a working
laboratory.

training programs by following the links available on this page.
