How to apply: Complete the student application
Location: Iowa City or Ankeny, Iowa
Description: The primary purpose of the internship is the implementation and training of staff and supervisors of a lab-wide inventory and ordering system and applying select 5S standardization systems for identification of resources in each laboratory. The inventory and ordering process, based on the Lean “Kanban” principles, are currently being developed and is being piloted in two areas of the laboratory. The student will continue this effort by working with individual laboratory sections to incorporate this system specific to their functions and needs. In addition, the UHL Lean Coordinator has identified specific standardization systems such that no matter what laboratory a staff member is working, notebooks, reagents, filing are all labeled or marked in a common manner thus reducing search time and errors. The student will implement the systems in each laboratory, working with and training staff to assure system sustainability.
Although the majority of this project is hands-on and experiential, there will be the need to apply cross-generational learning principles to the development of training material with the intent that the training material can be used as refresher and for new employees.
