"I was nominated by my graduate thesis mentor Dr. Larry Arlian," Mullins said. "For my master's thesis, I studied the inflammatory response of human skin cells upon exposure to scabies mites."

The findings from Mullins' study were also accepted for publication in the Journal of Medical Entomology. The article is expected to appear in the July issue.

Wright State University presents the Graduate Student Excellence Award to outstanding students in each of its graduate programs. Faculty in their respective graduate programs select winners based on academic achievement, thesis work and potential for contributions to the student's respective field.

Mullins is from Fairborn, Ohio, and began his one-year EID fellowship at the Hygienic Laboratory in August 2008.
