Two fellows join Hygienic Laboratory Staff Two Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) fellows joined the staff of the University
Hygienic Laboratory in September to assist with influenza surveillance in the state
and with other public health testing. Funding is provided by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Association of Public Health Laboratories.
Kara Levinson, a master's of public health graduate from the University of Michigan, and
Anna Van Stelten, a master's of food safety/microbiology graduate from Colorado State University, will
work for one year at the Hygienic Laboratory on the UI Research Park campus in
Coralville.

Fall Forum to bring laboratory preparedness training The Hygienic Laboratory will hold its Fall Professional Forum beginning Oct. 12
in six locations across the state to update laboratory staff and other public health
professionals on preparedness issues. Registration is required, but there is no cost
for the program.

Applications open for Student Grant Junior high and high school students throughout Iowa can now apply for the 2009-2010
Student Grant program to receive laboratory assistance for science projects. The
University Hygienic Laboratory sponsors the program. The application deadline is
November 30.

'Team Dead Weight' presents winning concept to U.N. Three eighth graders from West Branch Middle School who dubbed themselves "Team Dead
Weight" presented their award-winning environmental project to the United Nations
International Youth Conference in New York in August. The Hygienic Laboratory's Ankeny
staff provided testing for the project.

DVD-based game asks future scientists 'Did You See That?' How do you attract students to the field of laboratory science? The University
Hygienic Laboratory (UHL) answered that question by creating a DVD-based
game that highlights the many professions in a public health laboratory and the
associated academic and training requirements.

Dept. of Interior names Project AWARE Outstanding Program Senior White House and Department of the Interior officials this summer honored
Iowa's Project AWARE and 15 other groups and individuals as national winners of
the Take Pride in America awards for outstanding accomplishments by volunteers.
Limnologist Seth Zimmermann represented the Hygienic Laboratory - a sponsor
of the annual river cleanup - during ceremonies at the Department of the Interior's
Washington, D.C. office.

Lakeside centennial celebration also marks UHL anniversary More than 500 people gathered on July 11 on the grounds of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory at
Lake Okoboji to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the nation's first biological field
stations. The event also marked the one-year anniversary of the partnership between the
Hygienic Laboratory, the University of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to
expand the use of the Lakeside Laboratory facilities for water quality analysis and
monitoring.

Career Achievement Award honors former director William Hausler, Ph.D., director emeritus of the University Hygienic Laboratory,
received the laboratory's inaugural Hausler Career Achievement Award on May 22 during
the annual Reward and Recognition Ceremony at the Ankeny Lab.

Hygienic Laboratory pilots CDC program The University Hygienic Laboratory is one of the first state public health laboratories
to pilot the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program that evaluates testing
techniques to detect Legionella, the bacteria that cause Legionnaires' disease in
environmental samples.

Fellow receives grad student award Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) fellow and University Hygienic Laboratory influenza survey
coordinator Jeremi Mullins received the Graduate Student Excellence Award recently from
Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. Mullins was selected for the award based on
outstanding academic achievement in the master of biological sciences program and his
master's research project.

Staff unites for response to novel H1N1 For two weeks in the late spring of 2009, the University Hygienic
Laboratory was an integral part of the response to a public health
emergency that captured the nation's attention and tested the
preparedness of clinical laboratories and public health agencies throughout
the United States. This was the beginning of the outbreak of novel
influenza A H1N1 (swine-like),
which was still being confirmed
in Iowans in late July.
